[LESSON 2] Learning True Korean History with Hallyu Contents

[2nd Session] Learning True Korean History with Hallyu Contents

The second class of season 1 was amazing! We started the seminar with MC Jeonghae and MC Naya from Thailand. They read reviews from participants about the last class. Overall, the reviews were about how the information was new to the participants and how eager they are to learn more! Today’s lecturer was Ms. Son who is a translator and interpreter. She started the lecture with the Hongik Ingan ideology which means “to foster wide-reaching benefits for humanity” and the Korean history that is typically known to the world (like Gojoseon or the Korean War). Then, we watched the last episode of Mr. Sunshine. It was about the Korean Righteous Army telling about their situation to Canadian journalist, Fredrick Arthur MacKenzie. Then, we watched a clip from a movie called “A Resistance” about the March 1st Movement. We learned about the Donghak Peasant Revolution. Ms. Son said that mentioning the Japanese Invasion is important because it had negative effects on Korean language and Korean historical books as they were banned or burned by the Japanese officials. A huge amount of budget was used to distort Korean history, especially ancient ones.

Ms. Son talked about the creation of Hwanguk from the book Hwandan Gogi. The archaeological evidence of the ancient nations includes the Chamseongdan Altar at the top of Mt. Manisan, Hongshan Culture, large amounts of dolmens and mandolin daggers and the Bronze Mirror of Gojoseon. These artifacts had a lot to do with spiritual activities. Ms. Son presented heartwarming examples of Hongik Ingan, saying how it can be applied in our everyday activities and in larger contexts as well. One of the examples was about a million Korean people voluntarily helping to clean up the 2007 oil spill in Tae-an. She later ended her presentation by saying “Only when we truly know about our history and legacy, then we can step forward to the bright future”. The lecture was not only about the history of Korea but about the teachings it gives us! This made it meaningful and exceptional compared to other history lectures we learned at school. After the lecture, there were many comments on how the participants were deeply moved and inspired by the lecture because of many good teachings and a wide array of archaeological evidence and historical information. We understood more about the Korean spirit of preserving cultures and can connect it to histories of other countries. Thank you for reading this review.
