Korean Folk Tale Shimcheongjeon : ( The Tale Of Good Gaughter Shim Cheong )





Shim Cheong-jeon is a story about the titular Sim Cheong, who throws herself into the Indang Sea as a sacrifice so that her blind father can regain his eyesight. This selfless act of filial piety causes her to be resurrected and become an empress, and her father's blindness is cured.


This tale took place a long time ago in the beautiful Dohwa Village. Seven year old shim cheong took very good care of her blind father.

Cheong's mother passed away not long after giving birth to the baby girl, so her father had to beg other women of the village for breast milk in order to raise her all by himself.

Thanks to her father's devoted care, she grew up to be kind and healthy. Shim cheong is not only beautiful she was kind hearted that she helped around her village and cared for her father.






She is liked in sewing. She saved up money by sewing and lived happily with her father.

One day, lady jang from lower village send a servant and asked if shim cheong could come and visit so ,shim cheong followed the servent to lady jang's house I've heard a so much about your good deeds if only you could be my own daughter you won't have to work so hard if I adopted you as my own, what do you think , my dear girl? Thank you for being so kind to me but I have to take care of my father myself but will come and visit you often, but I have to go home now or my father must be worried for me.



And she was correct , shim Bongsa was anxiously waiting for her outside of the house,but when she don't come shim Bongsa start looking for her and unfortunately he fell on the river while looking for her and a monk passing by saved him in time.

"And a monk said to him you can get your eye sight if you offer 300 bags of rice to Buddha and pray for it."





After the shim Bongsa became excited and promised to offer 300 bags of rice even though he didn't know if he has enough rice for tomorrow or not and left for home.

When shim cheong return home she saw her father's clothes are wet and asked what happened father? Ans he told her about what monk said.




Shim cheong said "Father , don't worry! I'll find a way to afford the bags of rice!" then she heard about traders were looking for human sacrifice to calm the sea .


"That's it! I would do anything to help my father see..Even if I've to jump into the deep sea" Shim cheong went to see the traders and they agree to give 300 bags of rice and extra rice or money for her blind father when she's not around.



Shim cheong take good care of her father and sew some clothes and prepare a last meal for her father before living a day before sacrifice .








Shim Bongsa get to known from villagers after her living is that , shim cheong was going to sacrifice her life for her blind father .

My dear cheong ,what's the point of seeing when you're not here with me…

However, before jumping in the sea , determined shim cheong thought to herself Father , don't worry about me please open your eyes and see the world. And she cover her face with her skirt and jump in the deep sea.






Despite shim cheong sacrifice, sadly sim bongsa Still could not see.

But he did have the money and food provided by the sailers,so he became financial stable then before but the news of newly found wealth attracted some unwanted attention.

"A women simply known as Bbarngdeoks mom, took advantage of his situation and she stole his money little by little until she fled with the entire stash one day."

Shim cheongs father was left penniless and was forced to beg for food from villagers.





Meanwhile, the sea god was curious to know why beautiful Shim Cheong choose to jump in the water, after hearing about her love for her father he was deeply moved and decided to send her back.




The king was walking on the shore of the calm sea when he saw a lady Bloom out of a lotus flower

"What's your name?" 
"It's Shim Cheong"

The king fell in love with Shin-cheong at first sight and they decided to get married shim cheong liked her new life in palace but she missed her father so much

Seeing the Shim cheong in sorrow the king invited all the blind people in the country shim cheong spotted a man approaching her from a distance



Father "It that really you?"

"It's me Cheong your daughter" 

"My dear daughter cheong you are alive I have missed you so much"

That moment the eyes of shim bongsa open wide as if the heaven was just touched by Shim cheongs Love for her father and they live happily Ever After.


At the end both daughter and father meet again & how a simple kind hearted villagers girl became the Empress of the country, that's how the beautiful story begin…
