The Traditional Faith of Korean People and The Truine God

The history of Korean people is the history of Singyo. Singyo or The Spirit Teaching, the teaching in which Korean people directly receive teachings from God and apply them as the guideline to all of their daily lives.

The in depth meaning of the word Singyo is “governing the world through the will and the teachings of God by using the teachings of God as the pillar of human life.” This includes all areas of human’s life such as politics, religion, society and culture.

The God that Singyo worship is the same God that Korean people have worshiped as Samsin Sangje or Sangjenim. Since ancient times, Korean people have believed that God is the root source of living beings of ‘Mother Nature’, and when God reveals Himself to the world, God functions as the Three-Spirit, the Three-God or Samsin.

The term Samsin or Three-Spirit does not mean that there are three different Gods but God’s creativity works in three different ways. God reveals Himself as the creating God who gives life to all things, the edifying God that raises and teaches all things and the governing God that brings order to all living things.

However, there is another God that directly gives life and governs all things in heaven and earth by ruling through the principle of nature that lies within Samsin . This God in Singyo is called “Samsin Sangjenim.” Samsin Sangjenim is different from Samsin because Samsin has no form.

The rulers of Korean civilization since ancient times have ruled the nation on behalf of Samsin Sangjenim. Every lunar October, these rulers have offered heavenly rituals to Sangjenim in order to receive teachings.

Nowadays, we can find the heavenly altars where Korean people in ancient times offered heavenly rituals such as Chamseongdan altar in Manisan Mountain on Ganghwa-do Island and the alter in Taebaeksan Mountain.

The main teaching of Singyo is that every human being is a seeker of Dao in order to become their true selves. To achieve this state, according to Singyo, a person can accomplish by recovering the divinity and the light within himself and becoming one with the divinity of Samsin Sanjenim.

The heavenly ritual, indeed, is a ceremony of affirmation towards that goal.
