Do you know what are they? If the answer is not well don't worry! We can discover it together.
Manhwas are Korean comics in volumes while webtoons are digital comics - created by artists all over the world - very popular in South Korea. Most Korean comics are published as Webtoons then gain so much popularity to be published in volumes too.

These comics can be about various topics and genres such as romance, action, fantasy, slice of life, drama, and historical.
A lot of webtoons are transposed in K-drama or movies (for example True Beauty, Cheese in the Trap, etc.)

Historical webtoons are very popular for various reasons, but most of all because Korean history has so much to share with us even today.
Since the Japanese Domination and the risks of losing their own identity, Korean artists, writers, and poets decided to put a lot of effort and meaning into their works.

One of the most popular and interesting - yet sad but very true - is Grass written by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim.

This Manhwa is about the Comfort Women.

Who are the Comfort Women?

Well, this is surely a very important topic for Koreans. The Comfort Women were young Koreans (but also girls from different Countries such as China, Thailand, Vietnam...) forced by the Japanese army into sexual slavery during the Japanese Domination.

Grass is a manhwa about the story of the comfort women, from the point of view of the young Lee Ok-Seon a girl forced to leave her house to follow two Japanese soldiers in a brothel built by japanese soldiers.

From her perspective, we have the opportunity to understand women's condition during the Second World War.

Girls lost their identity; their Korean names were changed to Japanese ones but most important their freedom and free will.

But in the manhwa, the story of the young Ok-seon is narrated by herself, because Ok-seon lived even after the War and became a fighter like many survivors nowadays. A person who suffered so much but have the strength to teach us about the past, even if it means live again and again the painful memories.

Thanks to this Manhwa - but other webtoons too - we can learn the real Korean history and some crucial witnesses that risk to be forget.
